چکیده

This study presents an overview of Amazonian convection from the perspective of both ground and satellite intrumentation, with particular emphasis on radar observations of two MCSs that occurred during the TRMM-LBA field campaign. The MCSs formed in different meteorological regimes, based on profiles of atmospheric wind and thermodynamic data. The radar analyses show that the MCSs were distinct in terms of kinematic and microphysical characteristics. These observations suggest that the easterly and westerly wind regimes in the southwest Amazon region produce convection with different vertical structure characteristics, similar to regimes elsewhere in the global tropics (e.g., Maritime Continent).

Diurnal Cycle of Shallow and Deep Convection for a Tropical Land and an Ocean Environment and Its Relationship to Synoptic Wind Regimes

The characteristics of shallow and deep convection during the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission/ Large-Scale Biosphere–Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (TRMM/LBA) and the Eastern Pacific Investigation of Climate Processes in the Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere System (EPIC) are evaluated in this study. Using high-quality radar data collected during these two tropical field experiments, the reflecti...

This study utilizes TRMM satellite precipitation radar, lightning imaging sensor, and passive microwave imager data together with ground-based lightning data to investigate the vertical structure, lightning, and rainfall characteristics of Amazonian and sub-tropical South American convection for three separate wet-seasons. These characteristics are partitioned as a function of 850 mb zonal wind...

Improving Simulations of Convective Systems from TRMM LBA: Easterly and Westerly Regimes

The 3D Goddard Cumulus Ensemble model is used to simulate two convective events observed during the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Large-Scale Biosphere–Atmosphere (TRMM LBA) experiment in Brazil. These two events epitomized the type of convective systems that formed in two distinctly different environments observed during TRMM LBA. The 26 January 1999 squall line formed within a sheared l...

12a.9 Characteristics of Amazonian Rain Measured during Trmm-lba

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is a NASA satellite project initiated to address a gap in our ability to accurately observe detailed rainfall patterns over the tropical continents and oceans. To support TRMM, several field campaigns were conducted. The TRMM-LBA (Large-scale Biosphere Atmosphere) experiment was conducted over the southwestern region of the Amazon (state of Rondôni...
